The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday directed the superintendent of Adiala Jail to submit a detailed report and prison record regarding the alleged solitary confinement of PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi.
The order was issued by Justice Khadim Hussain Soomro while hearing petitions filed by Aleema Khan, Imran Khan’s sister, and Mubashra Khawar Maneka, Bushra Bibi’s daughter.
During the hearing, the court instructed the jail authorities to clarify whether the two prisoners had been kept in solitary confinement and, if so, to specify the legal basis, circumstances, and duration of such confinement.
The judge also sought a report outlining the facilities being provided to the former prime minister and his wife during their incarceration. The court observed that it would decide the maintainability of the petitions after reviewing the jail authorities’ submissions.
During an earlier hearing, Justice Soomro had noted that convictions under National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws do not prescribe solitary confinement as part of the sentence and observed that no such punishment was mentioned in the relevant judgments.
Imran Khan has been incarcerated since August 2023 and is facing multiple cases, including corruption and terrorism-related charges, following his removal from office through a no-confidence vote in April 2022.
