Federal Minister for Energy (Power Division) Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari said Pakistan’s power sector has undergone major structural reforms, leading to a reduction of more than 45% in distribution inefficiencies over the past two years.
Speaking at the Pakistan–Türkiye Business Conference, the minister told Turkish investors that the government had overhauled electricity distribution companies and was preparing them for privatization. He said the reforms are intended to improve operational efficiency, increase transparency, and deliver better services to consumers.
Leghari stated that the government remains committed to its privatization agenda and has introduced legislation preventing the establishment or acquisition of new state-owned electricity generation companies in the future.
He also highlighted the introduction of a competitive electricity market, saying an Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) has been established to oversee the transparent and efficient dispatch of electricity across the national grid. According to the minister, the National Grid company has been reorganized into two separate entities, a move he said has improved its operational performance.
